A day in Brighton
Barb had been to Brighton once before in 2006 and loved visiting the pier - never mind that it's a bit tacky! On that occasion we didn't have a lot of time to explore, so this time we took the whole morning to do that before meeting up with John's cousin Roger's daughter and grand-daughter (got that?) at the Royal Pavillion. We used the Park & Ride on the outskirts of town and got the bus in. This saves a lot of hassle as the streets are narrow, steep and winding and there's very little inner city parking.
| The bus dropped us right in town quite close to the pier |
| Barb in front of Brighton Pier |
| Yep ... we're at the pier |
| The day was fine but cold. Why were people swimming in that water? |
| The telescope swalled John's one pound coin but failed to deliver a view |
The fairground on the pier is still operational. Note how the helter-skelter is so close to the pier edge. How much do you love your kids? |
| We were not tempted to partake in the rides |
| Barb sat on the shingle beach ... you should've seen her try to get up! |
There was another fairground on the beach. The tower in the background is not a Tower of Death, just a viewing platform that goes up and down. Shame. |
John walked out on the groin. See the difference in the height of shingle, one side compared to the other. Classic long shore drifting. |
| The old west pier was burned down years ago, but the shell still stands |
After a visit to the beach,we went in search of lunch at The Lanes ... a high end shopping precinct near the beach with very high end prices.
| Barb was very taken with the colourful buses and streets |
She seemed to blend right in here. Can you see her? |
| We went off to find the Royal Pavillion to meet up with Sarah and Cathy |
| It's a wonderful building on the outside .... and the inside blows your mind! |
| It's so ornate you don't know where to look first |
| Each room is on a grand scale |
| The dining room was sumptious |
| Perhaps a bit of pheasant pie for dinner? |
| The girls had a great time |
| It's a wow! |
| Replicas of the dresses are made from paper! |
| This staircase was crafted from bamboo |
After exploring the Pavillion we went to the North Laines with Sarah and Cathy for a coffee. This precinct is way more funky and arty than the other.
| Vegetarian shoes? |
| Sarah and John |
| It has a hippy-ish vibe |
| Sarah looks happy and well |
| A hip cafe |
