Day 17 Arundel Castle in West Sussex

Arundel Castle

Barb had driven past Arundel Castle a couple of times before on previous visits to the UK. Once we even stopped there briefly and realised we wouldn't have time to go in and explore it properly. Today (Wednesday 20th April) was different. Today was The Day! Today the mission was to do Arundel Castle .... and do it we did! (You might infer that Barb was quite excited)

We parked up in the Castle carpark and paid for tickets that included the gardens, castle, and house. We were in for a real treat!

Arundel Castle entrance

Getting closer to the castle  .... Barb is officially excited!

The castle emerges from a sea of red tulips

One of the rooms of the castle

Amazing views from the keep

Right up the top of the keep

There's a lot of stairs up up up ....

Views of the 19th Century house attached to the castle

Suits of armour and swords

Just a little private chapel for the family

Family dining room

Private sitting room

Formal lounge

Staircase to the bedrooms

One of the many bedrooms

Part of the extensive library
(John: I'm sure they ordered the books by the yard)

Beautiful tulips in bloom

Barb in amongst the tulips

Family crypt
(The roof/ceiling  is quite stunning in its structure)

Together forever in the Fitzalan  Chapel (we think)

Room with a view

St Margaret's chapel

Barb needs a rest walking through these extensive gardens

Fountains and follies ... this garden has it all

Church of St Nicholas with a field of poppies

The masonry was in an extraordinarily good state of repair.  Apparently there was a lot of renovation as recently as a century and a half ago.

Watch this space .... there may be more pictures once Google Photos starts cooperating again ...

Love these preetty arbours

I want one of these in my garden

A field of poppies...or tulips

John and the tulips

The castle's dry moat

John in the rose gardens

Arundel castle is a "must do" if you're in
England in spring .... magnificent!
