Lap Around Australia Olive Pink Gardens & Ghan museum

Olive Pink Gardens and Ghan Museum

On our last full day in Alice Springs we explored some sights closer to town. Olive Pink Botanic Gardens had been recommended to us as a place we must visit. We arrived fairly early in the morning and while we were still feeling energetic we climbed to the top of the hill overlooking the gardens and Alice Springs. At the top the views were fabulous and we also came upon some small wallabies and larger kangaroos.

After climbing down again, we were ready to have a bite to eat and a coffee. It was very pleasant sitting out in the shaded terrace.

Afterwards we explored the rest of the gardens. We were able to identify quite a lot of the native plants from what we had learned yesterday at the Desert Park. There were also some lovely sculptures spread around the gardens to make it interesting.

After we'd walked around for some time we headed out towards the Ghan Museum. It was very interesting to see a short film on the history of the Ghan and to see some of the memorabilia in the museum.

We were even allowed to go into the old train itself and have a look through the carriages which included the kitchen, dining , saloon and sleeping cars.

Outside there was further displays and a small train ride for kids around the entire precinct. We enjoyed our time here. Karen accidentally left her hat in the movie viewing room and we were impressed that it was still there when we called in to retrieve it the next morning.
