Day 24 Lake Argyle

Day 24 Lake Argyle

The temperature prediction today for Kununurra was 36 degrees. A tad warm, thought we. In fact they lied....it was 37.

We spent the morning attending to chores. Barb doing washing (endless...especially when we're getting both so dirty and sweaty) John fiddling about with car maintenance ( changing air filters, checking tyre pressures, adding additives to the petrol and other boy type things)
By 10 am we were ready to head out for the day. Our chosen destination was Lake Argyle. Having the brief view of it as part of the Ord River cruise had piqued our interest to explore some more and maybe even have a swim in that glorious infinity pool overlooking the lake.
Where's togs when you need them?

Ah....that pool

Such views!

Halfway there we realised we'd forgotten to pick up the backpack containing togs, towel and sunscreen. Bum! There goes the chance of the infinity pool swim. I didn't think they'd like it if I went in fully clothed like I did at Edith Falls. Might spoil the ambience and gentility of the place.

So instead we had lunch in their dining room. The barramundi was pretty good although maybe it was freshwater rather than sea caught like I'm used to. It was really too hot a day to go on one of the several walking trails that go from the resort down to the lake or to various viewing points around the lake. We took the cheat's option of driving up to the water tower lookout instead. It gave a bit better view than we'd seen on our previous trip from the top of the dam wall, although Barb found the drive up very scary and refused to go down in the car preferring to walk instead while John (who wasn't at all scared) drove down.

You can view it all from the air.....for a price!

Lake cruises are available

It has to be said that Lake Argyle resort caravan park looks rather lovely and inviting. It would be good to stay a couple of days if time allowed, however it does have the disadvantage of being a long way from the shops. Kununurra (60 km away) is the closest, so you'd need to be well prepared with  grocery and grog supplies before you came.
Beautiful native flowers

When we returned to the campground at Kununurra our fellow campers on either side of us joined us for sundowner drinks at our place. Patricia and Tim had been for a flight over the Bungle Bungles which they very much enjoyed. Patricia was rather a loquatious woman who regaled us at length about her experiences of the day. Sadly the more wine she drank the more loquatious she became. Fortunately she had to go off to make dinner so we were saved from her twitterings. The other couple were interesting to chat to, being seasoned campers of many years. He (Geoff, I think his name was) spoke blithely of trips they'd done on the Canning Stock route, Gibb River Road etc. He was too polite to come right out and say it, but I think he was amazed at what John and I were attempting in such a small vehicle. Well at least we've managed to stay out of serious trouble......so far!!
He also said that on one particular Canning Stock route trip they did (which is through serious desert all the way) it was like driving through the Botanic Gardens.....wildflowers in bloom everywhere all the way.

We've very much enjoyed our stay in Kununurra and surrounds. It is like a little oasis of green in the desert. I'd rate it as my second favourite outback town ever. Broken Hill wins as favourite purely because of the art.
