Day 17 Katherine to Kununurra
Holiday plans have to be flexible, especially when you are camping and are not booking far in advance. On the advice of our new Canadian friends in Darwin, we thought we would stay overnight in Timber Creek and go on the Victoria River Croc cruise that they so enthusiastically recommended. It's only about a three and a half hour drive from Katherine to Timber Creek, so we popped into Katherine to do some shopping before we departed. We had given all our fruit and veges to Jess knowing that we would have to cross the WA border and quarantine just before Kununurra. So we got some fresh strawberries and a couple of potatoes and onions for dinner at Timber creek. We also called in to a camping store and bought two new camping chairs and a small folding table (one of our chairs had broken) MORE stuff to try to fit in the trailer.
The drive to Victoria River Crossing is rather lovely. The scenery of large sandstone cliffs looming over the river was most appealing. We stopped at the roadhouse there for lunch. The first people we ran into were our next door neighbours from the Kakadu campsite (a young German couple with their two young boys) They're heading in the same direction as us so our paths may cross again.

We drove on towards Timber creek. There's some big cattle stations out this way, and we occasionally saw herds of pale coloured cattle grazing in paddocks by the road. When we got to Timber Creek the Croc Shop where you book the cruise was closed! Being a Monday....that of course is the only day he doesn't operate. Bum! What to do? There didn't seem to be too much else to stay in Timber Creek for, so we rang ahead to the Discovery park in Kununurra to see if they had a powered site to spare. Success! We booked in for four days. Lots to see and do in this area. It might not even be enough time.

As ever backing the trailer into our campsite provided entertainment for our more experienced caravanning neighbours. One man was quite superior and offered to do it for us. Turns out he drives big trucks for a living so backing is not an issue for him. We unhitched and man handled it into place. Try doing that with a van! The people across the road from us couldn't believe how speedily we had the tent up as we were sitting down with drinks and nibbles by the time she came back from her shower.
