Day 18 Kununurra

Day 18 Kununurra

It's over-whelming to study all the enticing brochures of possible things to do in Kununurra and its surrounds. A lot of the tours are very expensive, but sometimes you just have to lash out a little bit (nah - a b****y enormous bit!). Within reason! A trip to the information centre in town seemed like a plan and the lady there was most helpful. She gave us still more brochures, and some solid info about timing and options for trips.

We retired to a coffee shop to pour over the info and maps and developed a plan (Hah. And double HAH! Plans are fluid until money has changed hands - ie from our hands to theirs). We have booked a full day 4WD bus trip into the Bungle Bungles for this Friday and Saturday (staying at the campsite just off the highway) We also secured a place on the Ord River cruise for tomorrow. We were very lucky to get this booking, the one we wanted was booked out all week, but we're happy enough with this alternative. It comes back at sunset so it will be very pretty on the lake.

After lunch we drove to the nearby  Hidden Valley National Park (Mirima) that overlooks the town. It's just past the local cemetery. Noice! We tried to drive up to the carpark but were foiled in this plan by the park pass machine which failed to work. Not wanting to cop a large fine for entering without the appropriate park pass we went back and parked at the cemetery and walked in. We're doing a lot of walking these days.

The park was beautiful. It's known as the little Bungle Bungles because some of the rock formations resemble the domes of Purnulu National Park. The walking path was very well done and there were plaques beside plants saying what they were and what the local Aborigines used them for. The views from the top of the rocks were great too. One way looked out over the lake and in the opposite direction we could see the distant ranges. The entire walk took little more than an hour, but we went a long way up, shortly followed by as long way down. It's tiring to be on holiday.

  1. I can't believe they don't have a sign on that machine saying it is broken. Has been for years and as a result never check people for permits, ever. Really like your blog and photos.
