Day 51 Kew Gardens and London shopping

Kew Gardens

Barb was a little miffed when she realised that you can't just rock up to the Chelsea Flower Show on a whim. The tickets are hotly contested .... especially when the Queen is there to open the show. Oh well .... we'll go to Kew Gardens instead.

The day started out dreary and drizzling as we scrambled to catch the tube out to Kew.

Grrr .... it's trying to rain on Barb's parade today

But, Barb's determined not to let a little shower of rain stop her

By the time we arrive at Kew Gardens the sun is struggling to come out

On the way in we stop off at the gift shop tea rooms for a sustaining cuppa,
before we attack the gardens (rather than being funnelled there on the way out)

And just like that .... the sun comes out. We are happy!

John is ready for some garden viewing action

It's pretty here all right .... next best thing to the Chelsea Flower Show
(Pah. Chelsea Shmelsea!)

We make our way to the Palm House

Inside the Palm House it's very warm and steamy.
Perfect weather for Queenslanders.

We do the tree top walk up this pretty spiral staircase and along the balcony

It's turning into a pretty nice day after all

The Water Lily House is gorgeous!

Loving all these water lilies

So many beautiful blooms

The glasshouses are massive

Barb is in the Octagon Room in the Temperate House

John in the Temperate House

Lots of interesting buildings to explore
But they charge extra for this pagoda - no we didn't!

Just happened upon these random sculptures

A sudden thunderstorm brought our Kew Garden adventure to an end. We ran for cover!
Did we say the glass houses are enormous? Just look!

We stopped off in Charing Cross Road on the way home

Barb is happy that the Jubilee bunting is up

We walked past Chinatown

Lots of colourful stuff for sale here

Our goal was to find 84 Charing Cross Road ....

.... but the bookshop is now a McDonald's. Sacrilege!

We walk down the road to Foyles and buy a new copy of the book for £8.99

It really is a lovely time to be in London with all the Jubilee decorations up

Bunting everywhere!

We were delighted to be part of it all!

Somewhat weary (for weary read "utterly drained"!) after a very big day traipsing all over London we limped home.

It didn't help that Barb wrenched her knee when she almost slipped on wet pavement this afternoon. Her knee is swollen and sore. Hopefully it will recover by tomorrow as tomorrow is Hampton Court Palace day. Woohoo!
