Day 40 The Carmargue

The Carmargue .... horses bulls and pink flamingos

Barb was officially excited to be finally fulfilling one of her Big Ticket bucket list items today by visiting the Carmargue to see the pink flamingos. Susan was equally keen to see this amazing sight. John was happy that the women were happy. No fool him!

It's just over an hour's drive to Saintes-Marie-de-la Mer
(the main town in the Carmargue region) from our place at Montpellier

We saw Carmargue horses grazing in fields as we zoomed by on the motorway. A few bulls too!

This farm had a stable full of horses

This statue was the best we could do for photos of the bulls.
Car was going too fast and blurred pics.

The drive along the coastline was very pretty with
lots of roadside wildflowers including poppies

We made it safely to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and even managed to find a parking spot quite close to the beach, even though it was quite busy and the "Complet" sign went up on the parking area just after we got in. We walked along for a bit looking at the town and beach before coming to our senses and a restaurant for lunch.

Barb at the Med

Yep. That's the Mediterranean Sea right there

Susan and John in the seaside car park

The town is quaint and small, but numbers swell hugely in the summer when it's full of tourists

Pretty flowers beside the Office Tourisme

We went to this restaurant across the road from the car park,
and what a good choice it turned out to be!

The food was to die for. Barb's salmon with citronesse sauce was melt in the mouth

Susan and Barb ordered delicious desserts. Note the van Gogh table mats too! Barb is thrilled!

We head off to the Parc to see the flamingos (even if John did drive right past on the first attempt)

Pink flamingos everywhere! Bear with me folks ... there's lots of photos to cull for this post

Be still my heart ... loving these graceful birds

Can you imagine living here with this in your backyard pond?

Miles and miles of trails around the lagoons

Susan captures a nice shot of Barb and John

Two peas in a pod

Flamingos take flight

In truth, there were many other birds also nesting and feeding at the lagoons

Even some horses grazing in nearby fields

But for us, the stars of the show were these beautiful birds

There were lots of viewing spots around the parc

Including some well placed hides for dedicated photographers with their big compensator lenses

Overall this was truly one of the highlights of the trip for all three of us. A must do for any bird lover for sure!
