Days 55 & 56 Final two days...then heading home

Home again home again jiggety jog

We pottered through our final couple of days with Susan just enjoying each others' company, doing a few last minute chores, walking Bella and attempting to stuff all our gear into the suitcases we bought over with us. No mean feat!

We take Bella to McGog hill. She loves to
socialise with the other dogs and their owners

There could be treats! Or pats and cuddles from other dog-lovers.

Barb was pleased that the poppies had finally bloomed

We're sure going to miss this dog! (except maybe
the slobber when she's begging for food)

Susan's garden is coming into fine bloom too

Her roses even have a lovely scent

The roses were blooming all over Great Chesterford

Barb liked this flowering bush (Ceanothus, we think). Bella was keen to get
away .... it was humming with multitudes of bees.

We'll miss the lovely village gardens

Finally we're all packed and ready to go. Nothing to do but slump. Siblings bonding.

Susan kindly drives us to Stanstead airport Bus Station where we catch the shuttle bus to Heathrow. It's such a nightmare on the M25 (and apparently has been for the last 30 years) that we always choose to stay overnight at an airport hotel, to minimise the risk of missing our flight due to London traffic chaos (no - chaos implies movement, M25 traffic can exhibit stasis!).

The M25 didn't disappoint. Traffic jams AND rain!
We were only delayed an hour or so.

We're safely installed at the Leonardo hotel and hopefully will
get a good night's rest before the long journey home tomorrow

One thing Barb has left out is the bizarre Community Police Officer we met. These are not policemen but rather auxiliary staff with less training and fewer responsibilities. At the Heathrow Bus Station we asked this one for directions to find a taxi. Having ascetained that we didn't want a mini-cab he tried to persuade us to get a regular bus - with all our luggage - to Hatton Cross, a nearby suburb, which he was sure was the nearest we'd find a cab. What?! No cabs at such an enormous airport? We thanked him profusely and made our escape. We found a taxi rank with no trouble!

We liked the Leonardo hotel as an airport hotel. Comfortable, Quiet and close to the airport

Not only that...there's an on-site restaurant and bistro bar for snacks and drinks

Barb watches Coronation Street for one last time in England (CPAP in situe)

As usual, Heathrow airport is very busy, but we manage to find seats and are soon heading to our boarding gate. Bye Bye England!

Home at last in Maroochydore! Thanks Pam & Pat for picking the weary travellers up from the airport and dropping us home. Our lovely neighbour, Chris who has been looking after the house while we were away has left the fridge stocked with some basic groceries, fresh milk etc. It's great to be home!!

Days 53 & 54 Return to Great Chesterford

Back home to Susan's place

Our London jaunt is over. In fact the whole holiday is almost over. We have four nights back at Susan's house in Great Chesterford before an overnight stay at a Heathrow Hotel and then the long haul flight home! Yay! (Home, that is. Not actually looking forward to that uncomfortable flight)

We seem to have aquired quite a lot of extra stuff whilst away. It was no easy task to haul it all down that steep long set of stairs at our London apartment and schlepp all the baggage to Kings Cross station. We went through to Cambridge again as the idea of catching the tube to Liverpool Street did not appeal.

Susan picked us up from the station, and Bella was very pleased to see us when we got home.

Bella is thrilled to see us

Mind you, she'd rather cuddle squirrel!

John cracks on with the list of little handyman tasks Susan
has for him. He places a new key lock-box on this pillar.

Barb, meanwhile, tackles the pile of laundry and ironing that has accumulated. We don't want to arrive back in Brisbane with a bagful of dirty washing when the weather has been so dodgy there. There's lots of little jobs to do, but at least when we leave everything will be in working order for Susan.

Susan's best friend Christine and Pat are coming to join us for lunch. Rather than go into a frenzy of cleaning and cooking, we choose to walk across the road to the Plough for a pub meal. We can sit outside with the dogs here too.

John is the token boy in the ladies lunch party
(That must be why I'm snarling!)

After lunch we sit in Susan's back patio for cups of tea and dessert

The ladies mastering Whatsapp

It's a very relaxed afternoon with old friends. It's the best way to entertain when there's not a lot of work or cleanup for anyone.

Day 52 Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace

It's going to be an interesting day. Barb's knee has not recovered from yesterday's jarring as well as she hoped and is still sore and swollen. She is determined not to let it stand in the way of going to see the palace. She first visited here in 2000 with her sister Pamela, and knew it would be a great day out. John had visited about 60 years ago as a child, so couldn't remember too much about it. The trip has to be accomplished by tube to Vauxhall and then change to the Overground (train) to Hampton Court Palace.

The tube is choc a bloc full, being morning peak hour when we leave. A kind young woman offers her seat to Barb. It pays to be old!

We eventually arrive at Hampton Court and the palace is located just across the bridge from the train station. Barb was very taken with a group of tiny children being taken on a walk with the child-carers.

The kids were all attached to a plastic leading harness. Wot a good idea!

There's the palace!

We cross the bridge at a slow pace due to Barb's knee

We buy the tickets to enter and ask if it's
possible to hire a wheelchair for Barb ....

.... it sure is! Not only that we get a personal assistant to guide us through

The internal cloister gardens are immaculate!

John steers Barb around the state rooms

The rooms are vast and magnificent
Look at the roof structure!

Henry VIII built the old Tudor palace

Queen Elizabeth I also lived at there

Very ornate painted ceilings

Wall tapestries abound

Bedroom fit for a king

Beautiful stained glass windows

Beautiful formal gardens viewed from the palace windows

The palace was built by the Tudor Henry VIII, and then
William of Orange came along and re-decorated the place

The pies were pretty good!

When it's time to tour the gardens Barb trades
the wheelchair in for a ride-on scooter

Now THIS is more like it! Barb loves the independence of the scooter

Those magnificent brooding skies!

Cinderella's coach?

Pretty blooms

We chose not to do the maze .... lots of schoolkids went in ahead of us

The gardens are very well maintained

Barb amidst the flowers

John is captivated by the garden statues

Sadly we had to give back the scooter at the front gate.
It certainly made getting around so much easier!
