Last day in Budapest. Return to UK
For our final day in Budapest we were allowed the luxury of a sleep-in. We didn't have to vacte our room until 11am, when we had to take our bags down to the lobby to be stored by the hotel until we departed for the airport at 5.30 pm.
Susan was feeling too exhausted to go out anywhere and opted to stay in the cool of the lobby for the day while Barb and John took themselves off for a walk around town. We headed in the opposited direction we'd walked yesterday and it really was only about ten minutes walk to St Stephen's Cathedral. We'd seen this Cathedral in the distance last night when we went out for dinner (about three blocks from our theatre venue) and it looked quite magnificent.
Up close it was very large and imposing and took up a whole block by iteself. The views from the steps down the avenue to the river were amazing. It was very busy with tourists here this morning so we walked on towards the river.
This city has really impressed us with its gorgeous buildings everywhere, surrounded by parks and gardens. We have by no means seen the whole thing. It's a place I'd be happy to re-visit if the opportunity arose.
We walked back and collected Susan to take her out for a leisurely late lunch at a restaurant only 100 metres from our hotel. It was very pleasant there, and we were in a shady cool area, so the heat wasn't too debillitating. We certainly like the way they do a cold lemonade, flavoured with lots of chopped fruit and ice cubes. So refreshing.
It wasn't a very long wait after that until David, our tour guide appeared to gather the troops to board our coach for the airport. He not only say us to the Departure area, but made sure we were checked in. Susan and Barb and another elderly couple were taken through in wheelchairs right through to the departure gate. There were a lot of people waiting at the gate when we arrived, but an announcement was made and they all left to go to another gate. We were left stranded on an arm of the airport away from everything. There was a coffee shop a long way off, so Barb walked down to get drinks and a snack, and then John appeared, but no-one else from the flight. It's been delayed.
We had a very long wait at the airport and by the time we finally arrived at Gatwick it was past midnight. Susan drove all the way home after we'd picked up the car and we finally made it back to her place at 2.30 am. Phew! It was surprisingly busy on the highway even at that late hour.
The next few days were spent recovering from our trip. There was masses of laundry to be washed, dried and ironed, food shopping to be done etc.
Susan had asked her friends Christine, Jane and Pat over lunch on Tuesday, so John swung into cooking mode and produced a roast beef and roast potatoes and various salads, apple pie and meringues with strawberries and cream and ice-cream for dessert followed by Godiva chocolates.
Yum!
Tomorrow we'll go to London for the day as Geoffrey will be dropping the dogs off to Susan's.
