Lunch at Jamie Oliver's
It was overcast today, despite the weather girl promising some sunshine and only occasional showers. We made the trip into Cambridge anyway, defiantly refusing to take our umbrellas. We parked at Trumpington Park and Ride where John and I had parked on our previous visit and got dropped off by the bus at John Lewis department store which was our desired port of call.
Susan had an expensive blouse to return that had started to disintergrate after just a couple of gentle washes. Leaving her to deal with the return desk,I went off to browse the haberdashery section looking for decorative trim for the little teddy bear I am knitting. Oooh! There was lots of nice stuff there. Not as good as Spotlight, though. Then we moved on to look at various other shops in Cambridge including Lakeland where we picked up some more Lock and Lock storage containers for Susan. Don't panic John: I didn't buy any despite the temptation.

The markets were in progress in the town square but as it was beginning to sprinkle with rain so we didn't linger over the stalls. It was a good excuse to head to the Jamie Oliver restaurant for lunch.
Jamie Oliver's restaurant is in a beautiful old Victorian building right opposite the old Corn Exchange (which is now a theatre) in the heart of the Cambridge shopping precinct. The inside of the building has been completely refurbished but it retains some of the lovely original features such as the polished wood floors, ornate marble columns and a central cupola with glass inserts. The very high ceiling makes the whole place feel light and airy.

The actual kitchen is gleaming stainless steel ; modern and functional and is semi on view to the patrons.
The menu is pure Jamie Oliver. You could almost hear him reading it out to you. What's more it has some delicious selections on there and is surprisingly well-priced. Susan and I went the whole hog. We had entrees which we shared and for our mains Susan had fish and I had a medley of canneloni.
Desserts were lovely too...again we sampled each other's choice. Both of us were very impressed and went away feeling full but happy.

Am absolutely loving following you all around Europe and England.... Makes me a little green with envy, as it all looks so fantasic... Makes me want to travel now...instead of later.. Your meal looks fantasic. Steve says that you should go to the "Fat Duck" in London for a meal. Listed in the top 10 restaurants in the world.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that John has arrived home safely, but I bet you and missing him. Keep up the entries. Reading them is the highlight of my day.
